Oak Brook Tax - ID tax results on securities sales

The stock market has been roiling since tariffs were announced. You may decide this is a good time to reduce your exposure.

When selling securities, the method you use to identify which shares you're selling can have a significant impact on your tax liability.

    Identification Methods:

FIFO (First-In, First-Out) - Default method; oldest shares sold first. May result in higher gains if early purchases were at lower prices.

Specific Identification - You choose exactly which shares to sell. Requires clear documentation. Allows you to select shares with highest basis to minimize gain.

Average Cost - Available for mutual funds. Averages the cost of all shares.

    Strategic Considerations:

    • In a rising market, selling highest-cost shares minimizes gain
    • In a declining market, consider selling low-basis shares to offset other gains
    • Consider the holding period—long-term gains are taxed at preferential rates
    • Factor in wash sale rules if repurchasing similar securities

Work with your tax advisor to determine the best identification method for your situation.
